Ceiling Lights for Low Ceilings

In many flats the ceilings are 2.4–2.6 m high. Ceiling lights for low ceilings have to give plenty of light and take up little space below the ceiling. The best choice is a slim LED flush ceiling light fixed directly to the ceiling.

How tall can a ceiling light be

At least about 2.1 m must remain below the light wherever people walk. With a 2.5 m ceiling that means a light no taller than 40 cm, though visually it is better to stay within 10–12 cm. More than half of our LED ceiling lights are up to 10 cm tall, about 40% are up to 8 cm, and the slimmest is only 2.4 cm.

Why LED rather than a bulb chandelier

The built-in LED is flat, so an LED flush ceiling light can be just a few centimetres tall. On chandeliers with E27 bulbs the sockets and shades take up space: in our catalogue they are usually 20–30 cm tall. If you want bulbs, choose a model with GX53 bulbs: they are flat, and some such chandeliers are only 7–11 cm tall.

Width and light

A wide, flat light suits low ceilings: it spreads the light across the whole room. Choose the diameter by the rule (length + width) × 8 cm — for a 3.5 × 3 m room that is 52 cm. Among our LED lights up to 10 cm tall, the width ranges from 17.5 to 80 cm and the luminous flux from 1620 to 23400 lm, so you will find a suitable model for a hallway and a living room alike. How much light you need: how many lumens you need per m².

A pendant light over the table

You can use a pendant light with low ceilings too — over a table, where nobody walks. It should hang about 60–80 cm above the tabletop. With a 2.5 m ceiling and a 75 cm high table, the bottom of the lamp should be at about 1.35–1.55 m, so the lamp including its cable can be 95–115 cm long. Our pendant lights are 80–100 cm tall.

Tone and control

With a low ceiling the light is closer to your eyes, so adjustable brightness and a warmer tone for the evening are useful. Almost all slim LED lights come with a remote that changes the tone from 3000 to 6500 K. More: colour temperature and chandelier with remote control.

What else to use

If one light is not enough, add wall lights: they take no space below the ceiling and give a soft light for the evening. The only ceiling fan for low ceilings is the flat one — see how to choose a ceiling fan. You will find slim lights in LED chandeliers and in the selections of hallway ceiling lights, bedroom chandeliers and kitchen ceiling lights.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of light suits a 2.5 m ceiling?

A flat LED ceiling light up to 10–12 cm tall, and a pendant light over the table.

Can I put a large light on a low ceiling?

Yes, if it is flat. A wide, flat light gives more even light than a small, tall one.

How do I find a slim light in the catalogue?

Look at the “Height” row in the product description: for low ceilings, look for up to 10 cm.
