Kitchen ceiling lights

Products: 24

Kitchen ceiling lights are VARGO ceiling fittings in which the worktop, the food and the table are easy to see. More than half have an E27 or GX53 base; the rest are LED chandeliers with a built-in light source, most of them with a remote.

What light a kitchen needs

For cooking, neutral light of around 4000 K works well: food colours are easy to see in it. For dinner, warmer light of around 3000 K is more pleasant. For most of our LED kitchen ceiling lights you can change the colour temperature from 3000 to 6500 K with the remote — switch the tone depending on whether you are cooking or sitting at the table.

A kitchen needs more light than a bedroom. How bright a light is shows in its luminous flux in lumens (lm): for the models in this section it is from about 1600 to 6500 lm. The power of the LED ceiling lights is from 18 to 90 W. See also: lumens per square metre and colour temperature.

What size of ceiling light suits a kitchen

Width is from about 29 to 78 cm, most often 42–61 cm. Rule of thumb: add the kitchen’s length and width in metres and multiply by 8 — that is a suitable diameter in centimetres. For a 2.5 × 3 m kitchen that is about 44 cm, for 3 × 3 m about 48 cm, for 3 × 4 m about 56 cm.

Low ceilings

LED kitchen ceiling lights are flat: their height is from 2.4 to 10.5 cm, and almost all are no taller than 10 cm. Lights with a base are usually taller — up to 31 cm — so for low ceilings an LED model is the better choice. See also: ceiling lights for low ceilings.

LED light or light with a base

In LED chandeliers the light source is built in: there are no bulbs to buy or replace. Most have an infrared remote, which works when pointed at the light.

Lights with a base take from 2 to 8 E27 or GX53 bulbs, and bulbs are not included. For a kitchen, neutral-light bulbs (around 4000 K) are a good choice; E27 LED bulbs can be ordered in Bulbs and other products.

Light above the table

A ceiling light gives general light for the whole kitchen. Above a dining table or a kitchen island you can add pendant lights. If the kitchen is combined with a dining room, see also dining room chandeliers; all models are in Chandeliers.

Colour, materials and care

About half of the kitchen ceiling lights are white or white with chrome details. There are also black ones with chrome and black ones with copper, wood or gold details. The body is usually metal with an acrylic diffuser or glass shades.

In a kitchen, steam and grease settle on a light, so do not hang a ceiling light directly above the hob. A smooth acrylic diffuser and glass shades can be wiped with a damp cloth when the light is switched off and has cooled down.

Frequently asked questions

What colour temperature is best for a kitchen?

For cooking, neutral light of around 4000 K; for dinner, warmer light of around 3000 K. With an LED ceiling light and a remote you can switch the tone.

Can I install a ceiling light above the hob?

Better not: our lights have an IP20 protection rating, and steam and grease soon dirty them. The hob is lit by the extractor hood light.

Which ceiling light suits a low ceiling?

An LED one: almost all LED kitchen ceiling lights are no taller than 10 cm, and the flattest is 2.4 cm.

Are bulbs included?

LED ceiling lights have a built-in light source. For lights with an E27 or GX53 base, bulbs must be bought separately.
