How to Choose a Ceiling Fan with Light

A ceiling fan with light combines a light fitting and a fan: in summer it creates airflow, all year round it gives light. To keep it safe and comfortable, check the ceiling height, the room size and the fixing point before you buy.

Ceiling height — the most important thing

The blades must be at least about 2.3 m above the floor so that nobody catches them with a hand or an object. Our classic fans are 50 cm tall, so they need a ceiling of about 2.8 m or more. If the ceiling is 2.5 m, as in many flats, choose the flat LED chandelier with fan: it is only 10 cm tall.

Classic or flat model

Classic fans have 3 or 5 large blades and a diameter of 132 cm, the largest 152 cm, and they create a strong airflow. In the centre is an LED light of 22 W and 1980 lm, with three tones: 3000, 4500 and 6500 K. The flat model is 47.4 cm wide, with 7 blades, 6 speeds and reverse; its light is 7380 lm and can be dimmed.

Size for the room

As a guide, a 132 cm fan suits a bedroom or living room of about 20–30 m², and a 152 cm fan a larger space. The flat model creates less airflow and suits a smaller room. The blade tips should be at least about 45 cm from walls and sloping ceilings.

Is the light enough

The 1980 lm of the classic fan is roughly enough for a 10–13 m² bedroom. For a larger room add wall lights or choose the flat model with 7380 lm. How to calculate: how many lumens you need per m².

Fixing and safety

A classic fan weighs 6–7 kg and rotates, so it is fixed to concrete or solid timber ceilings, not to a suspended-ceiling profile or plasterboard. The flat model weighs 2.6 kg. Leave the wiring to an electrician. All our fans have protection rating IP20: they are meant for dry rooms, not for a bathroom or an open terrace.

Remote control

All our ceiling fans with light come with a remote that controls both the light and the fan. On the flat model it works by radio (2.4 GHz) and does not need to be pointed at the fan. More about remotes: chandelier with remote control.

Reverse for winter

Reverse changes the direction of rotation. In summer the fan blows air down and creates a feeling of coolness; in winter, in reverse, it pushes the warm air that collects under the ceiling down along the walls. The flat model has reverse; for the classic ones check the product description.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a ceiling fan to a 2.5 m ceiling?

A classic one — no, the blades would be at a height of about 2 m. The flat LED chandelier with fan — yes, it is 10 cm tall.

Is a ceiling fan with light suitable for a bedroom?

Yes, it is the most common place: you can control the light and the fan with the remote from bed.

Does a fan cool the air like an air conditioner?

No, the air temperature does not change, but the airflow makes you feel cooler.
